Assumption Parish

Assumption Parish has historical roots that extend back to the founding peoples of Canada. The parish was formally established in 1767 – the first in Canada west of Montreal – and reached out to French settlers and First Nations living along the shores of the Detroit River.

Following the American Revolution and the Loyalist settlement and expansion of Sandwich Towne (now Windsor) the parish and community grew significantly. In the mid 1 9th century Assumption Church was such a religious and cultural landmark that it became the cathedral of the Diocese for 10 years. The Church is further tied to its community through its association with Assumption College, which evolved from its beginnings in 1857 to become the University of Windsor.

Assumption Parish continues to be recognized for its important role in contributing outreach to the poor in the city’s west end.

Today, Assumption Parish remains a place where past and present, City, Church, University, and the wider community come together.
